Favorite Photo: an October Farewell

A slight breeze,

the groan of an old chain,

the creak of weathered wood.

A screen door slams in a memory.

Voices drift out into the yard making plans for a day that happened long ago.

An ordinary day that would never need to be remembered.

A day that everyone was just living and working and existing.

And yet…

there is a rustle,

the porch swing moves just an inch…

and somehow an ordinary day IS remembered,

full of insignificance, replete with mundane activities.

For just a moment,

a house remembers its family.

And in a crackle of wood and a crumbling of plaster,

it releases all that it has been holding onto like a weary sign.

Ready to rest.

Ready to say goodbye.
