A few of my Favorite Things: Updating the loft for Summer

When we bought our house it was listed as a 5 bedroom. The upstairs “boasted” four rooms separated by a narrow hallway. Only one of the rooms was larger than 10×10. They all had slanted ceilings and no closets. The original foundation and build of this old farmhouse implied that the upstairs was once meant to be a single room at the top of the stairs.

Countless additions and remodels in its 100+ year existence and some creative framing around windows and somehow we arrived at four bedrooms. Well, not “we.” We bought the place and I immediately started rethinking those rooms. The first thing I knew had to go was the long narrow hallway. The room the hallway took space away from was the smallest and most impractical space to remain a bedroom of all the upstairs rooms, so we converted it to a loft space outside of our bedroom. It is one of my favorite rooms in the house. And one of my favorite things in the room is the daybed I purchased to role play as a couch. I loved the cozy look it had over the winter and once I started thinking about switching it up for summer- I thought the mini makeover was worth a share!

This was the winter look:

The whole ensemble was gathered from pillows and bedding I already owned. The unique thing about styling a daybed as a couch is how easily you can change up the look and style by using an inexpensive fitted sheet as your main fabric. Ordering a mattress cover to exactly match the daybed upholstery is always an option, but for me- this is much more fun!

Hard to believe I purchased all these pillows at different times and for use in other rooms in the house.

The birch bark pillows were seasonal from Homegoods and the wood grain jeep pillows were found at Redbubble, an online shop where independent artists can upload their designs and receive a commission when their art is used on pillows, T-shirts and posters.

And now the Summer Look!

A little lighter. A little touch of pink.

Simple.

A makeover for the cost of the sheet set which I bought online from Target. The daybed mattress being a twin I actually had more luck finding this pattern by browsing in the kids bedding options.

The Flour pillow covers are H&M Home from years ago. I always pop over to H&M seasonally to see what pillow covers they have on clearance. You can usually snag something fun for around $5 each. This was how I cured my pillow buying addiction from Home Goods. It is easier to store new covers than entire pillows and I am way less impulsive shopping online.

I hope you enjoyed this mini-makeover and peek into one of my favorite spaces in the house. I am working on a few more entries to share those tiny but mighty small rooms that have won me over by being both functional and adorable. Stay tuned!
