Countdown to Summer

It snowed. In May. Of course it did. This is Wisconsin after all. It might feel like a setback to the garden and the other yard work we began when we were high on a week of 80 degree days but the promise of summer ahead makes it tolerable. When I think about all the potential in those glorious days of June, July and August I know I can be patient right now. The events I don’t want to forget about are already being slotted into our calendar. Here are my recommendations for some must-dos this year! I find planning and looking ahead can be a great remedy for a rainy/snowy day!

The Bear Lake Trailorfest

Manawa, WI

One of my favorites to kick off June is the Bear Lake vintage camper show at their campground. Called the Spring Vintage Trailorfest, you can swing by the campsite to take a stroll through campsites staged for their camper’s era with nostalgic furniture, appliances and other kitsch. Many now offer a rummage sale experience with small tables of goods in front of their sites.

Visit a classic summer vacation town

Green Lake is one of my favorite June destinations. A cute walking town that is close enough to other quaint downtown shopping in neighboring Ripon and Princeton, the lake itself is beautiful by boat if you own or choose to rent.

Elkhart Lake is also a top pick if you can book a stay before the summer rush. Siebkens Resort feels like a spot suspended in time and if a walk downtown after dinner for a cone at Gessert’s Confectionary doesn’t transport you to back in time I am not sure what will!

Take in some live music!

New London/Waupaca, WI

Events at New London’s Huckleberry Campground and the lineup of bands scheduled to perform at Clearwater Harbor in Waupaca (where you can enjoy the concert dockside), are a must for a great meal and some free entertainment off the beaten path.

Eat Pizza in a Vineyard

Hortonville, WI

Woodfire pizza nights are a favorite of mine and have gained in popularity since the first time we showed up and ate in a corn crib. Now Whistler’s Knoll offers a Bloody Mary Sunday event as well, usually accompanied by a food truck.

Take a road trip for gelato in an Old Mill

Iola, WI

Last year the Old Mill passed ownership from the couple who was running the place during my initial visit in 2014. Opening for the season on May 5th it appears the business and venue will be keeping in tact all of the things that made me first fall in love with it!

There are so many more events and worthy ways to spend the summer than the short list I mentioned here! I am hoping to resume my Fall Travel Series in September and I am working on a Summer Series to highlight small businesses.

Here’s a Few from past years to Check Out!

Dragonfly Paddlers
