What’s new in appliances?
I can’t walk through a Home Depot or Lowe’s without being distracted by something catching my eye. The other week it was the newest range of color choices for fridge fronts. From frosted sea-blue to a citrus orange, I will now be on the lookout for images of kitchens where these new colors are being implemented! Here’s a look at what else is new with this appliance-
Here is the floor model of the fridge, called the Bespoke Refrigerator from Samsung. You have several door styles besides the daring new color choices.
Once the bottom drawer freezer concept was introduced to fridges the 3-door french style became an automatic hit. It didn’t take long for the industry to ask themselves how they could change up this now classic layout. So they added that middle drawer.
Not only did the extra drawer break up the look of the front of the fridge and add a luxury element, this particular model is boasting 5 different temperature settings. All I can think is you must be real serious about your food preservation if you get excited over a drawer that can be kept at 5 different temperatures. I am not sure I could ever be that serious about my food or even intend to keep it long enough to have this matter, but for anyone who can rattle off 5 ways they would use these settings this is probably a dream come true!
The other innovation that is becoming more standard is the door within a door.
This was not my first time contemplating the usefulness of this function on a fridge display but this was my first time seeing the middle door used as a water distribution center. I appreciate the idea of keeping this from the outside of the fridge door to aid in the overall cosmetics of the appliance. Much like the ambitious temperature settings in the aforementioned drawer- this overachieving “beverage center” offers water more than one way.
It’s not that it’s a bad idea. In fact, I think the self filling water pitcher is brilliant. It just amuses me how obvious it is that we are living in an era of consumerism that is now based on- “Why choose? Have both!” Which is why I am left wondering how easy it will be for the average indecisive consumer to choose from all of these colors available for the fridge door front-
Again- the designer in me is like- “Yes! Let’s Do It!” Show me your Clementine kitchens, maybe with kitschy oranges on the wall paper.
Or a navy steel and emerald green fridge tucked in among your black cabinets, the kind of kitchen you see generated with AI that has an amazing arched window looking out at a foggy European mountain scape.
But we will likely only be seeing these fridges pop up in clean lined minimalist kitchens with hardware-less flat front cabinets.
Or even more than likely we will see the average indecisive consumer “ooh and ahhh” at the selection and then pick the more safe stainless steel or matte black option.
And as long as we are on the topic of colored appliances, let me just say how vibrant the BlueStar offerings were at last year’s builder show.
Please! Somebody have some fun with these!!!
The colors were interchangeable as well. If you notice, the stove dials are shown in an olive green color. A far cry from my previous favorite stoves that had me completely rethinking how I felt about white appliances-
There is still something so glamorous about this to me, although I will say the copper handles have quickly outpaced the silver in recent popularity.
While these examples of color range from quiet luxury to bold and showy, I hope they allow you to stretch your ideas for your space. This month my posts have been heavy in color revelations that are meant to make the process of bringing new shades into your home more enticing and less intimidating. I’m sure a bright orange or yellow fridge would give most people pause and I am not in a position to incorporate either into the scheme of my house, but I began the year with a mission – to see the tides of black and white farmhouse style turn. To see comfort and joy return to decorating. To see personalized spaces that the masses might shake their heads at (but that’s kind of the point of something being personalized!) I will continue looking for examples in everyday life and design that I can share, especially as I work more on my collected home series idea. In the meantime-
