Another look at Woodfield & some tips for your own car condo interior design
Last week we explored the Woodfield Motor condos and took a peek inside many of the newly finished and in-progress units. Today I want to focus on the interior details of what I would consider the “model home” of the development.
Although new construction, the most charming condos relied on adding features that gave it a vintage and more personalized feel. This has always been a favorite topic of mine, as I have highlighted-
- Three things to keep in an old building if you have it or add if you don’t
- Three ways to add old house charm to new construction
- And next month’s- Three things to love about a vintage lake cottage
So let’s do it again- here’s some tips to how to give your own glam garage a little extra interior design!
Black and Brick are timeless
Sure, these shiny cars are distracting but look at that wall!
Seriously, stop drooling over the cars for one quick sec- there are so many good things happening on this one wall.
- Faux windows to keep the top third of the wall from feeling heavy
- Brick- which is classic old mechanic, always a solid choice
- Black paneled walls to break up a large space and give it some unexpected elegance
While Black and Brick are timeless the other great take away here should be that proportion matters. The entire scale of the wall, from the mid point soldier brick to the design of the paneling, wasn’t just happenstance, it was thought out design.
Lighting is an opportunity
It would be a no-brainer to use only industrial metal sconces, and don’t get me wrong- I am a fan of these as well, but the idea of this ornate Victorian looking light on an over sized newel post just captivated me. It echoed the elegance of the paneling and brought a whole other- why not? element to the garage space. Why not throwback to even older, more refined, especially if your car collection is centered around European classics.
The bathroom also features lighting and a unique mirror that contradicts what we all think of as the industrial man-cave look. But many classic car enthusiasts love antiques and old world style, they just haven’t seen as much of it blended into the current car culture.
Modern finishes transcend indoor-outdoor
Glass garage doors, two way fireplaces and of course- the choices for flooring today that you could put in a garage and drive on, have really elevated the look of these spaces.
Besides epoxy finishes there are luxury vinyls and impressive wood look ceramics that are built for heavy wear and tear. Of course, these car condos are not seeing winter salt and slush. The show vehicles are usually quite clean when entering.
A Fireplace for the Win!
You can’t deny it. Even on a hot summer day you just can’t deny it-
Picture any great masculine space- a cozy cabin, a grand hunting lodge, a library or study…it’s hard to imagine these without conjuring a roaring fire in a fireplace. So it would be hard to deny that a fireplace feels right at home here, paired with leather chairs and wrought iron tables.
Final Thoughts
There are staple elements to any good garage design- dark colors, metal, leather, brick and patina. Then there are moments that challenge you as a designer to think of the whole scene before you differently. I had another why not? moment in the loft looking up at this Waterhouse art. This is a scene of nymphs in lily pads from an 1896 oil painting reproduced as a back lit film. It was successful in giving the effect of a stain glass skylight. It was so off-brand for the average car collector that it was instantly the most interesting thing in the whole condo. I had questions about how this came to be, but I didn’t need answers. I liked it. It was unique and the colors played perfectly with the brick wall and colorful bottles. My final thoughts would be to encourage you to find your own why not? moment. Maybe it’s a favorite piece of art that never went with your current aesthetic or something you inherited that you have no room for in your house. If it’s something you love, then that’s reason enough to find a space for it in a place where you should be able make your own rules!
