Sometimes you can live somewhere for years and years and years and still discover something new just a short distance away…
That’s how we felt when we parked down the road at a trail head and discovered the Wolf River Bottoms natural area is not just for hunting, but has hiking trails through woodlands, across marshes and over open areas of sand hillsides where an old apple orchard once stood.
But halfway in and before we ever made it to the other side we found the gravel road.
The old gravel road took us no where and yet it told us everything.
It told us about a hot summer day when life was harder and yet somehow simpler.
It told us to appreciate the sunshine because you never know when a storm is on its way.
It told us to listen…
To hear what makes up the absence of engines and progress and busyness.
Then it wound off into the distance as if never ending…
And we heard nothing…
Until we heard everything.
