Mixed Meadia: Marketing & Supporting Local Business

While no one needs another reason to visit Door County (there are so many!) I will say that I want to share an observation about the custom brewing, distilling and winery industry that should be talked about more. The fantastic marketing and beautiful art that goes into some of these bottles and labels.

Take for example the Mixed Meadia bottle at Hatch distillery in Door County.

These clear liquid spirits have been adding imagery you can only see through the bottle. While not easily photographed- this art has an almost kaleidoscope effect.

My other pick was this fantasy art on their wine bottles.

Here we have a trio of winged creatures born of some mythology that involves our native fox, badgers and pelicans. The soft color pallet fits perfectly on trend with the artwork I was ogling down the road at Maxwell House:

Proving how integrated these color trends and styles of art and fonts are in our everyday life. Design exists in so many facets beyond just fashion and home decor. In a sea of options- how we respond to these images could influence which brand of wine we ultimately purchase.

Hatch Distillery in Egg Harbor, by the way, is a great place for sampling a flight of either their Mixed Meadia Wines or their bourbons and whiskeys.

They have a great little setup that reflects the new “working” space idea like most breweries are even high end restaurants are embracing. Basically you can see their behind-the-scenes operations through glass windows and garage doors.

While I am not much of a drinker- I think the reason I like visiting wineries and craft breweries is that I appreciate visiting a place that feels local and unique. I appreciate patronizing a business that sells what they produce. Don’t get me wrong- the new Total Wine in Appleton is impressive, but even with all of it’s endless options and tempting samples- I will still buy more from places like Hatch when I am there. It’s because I am not just buying the product- I am buying their story. I am buying the first stamp of an imprint in my memory that will link this purchase and this experience with a tradition of stopping here. Anyone who has lost a favorite stop from a familiar road trip understands. They are irreplaceable in your mind.

Another cool factor about Hatch and Mixed Meadia is that they lean heavily on promoting their local resources. Their recipes explain the strong connection between agriculture and science and the micro climate of a locale as distinct as the Wisconsin peninsula.

No one needs another reason to visit Door County, but while you are there- try a Hatch or Mixed Meadia flight. My favorite was the Second Breakfast wine- I highly recommend it!
