Trending: Decor for those who love a little more
There are a few must-stop shops that I know I can count on to point me in the direction of a new trend. And while I don’t always believe in following trends, but rather purchasing what you love- understanding the current vibe can help you discern what to pull from your collection for display or what to snatch up from a estate sale or flea market. Narrowing down what you love to embrace a moment the design world may be having is a great reason to rotate in and out things you may not have the space to display all the time. So here are a few of the trends I spotted recently that I think are worth considering.
Patterned Lampshade
Patterned lamp shades look like they are about to have a moment. We are coming full circle from a minimalism ripe with neutrals and the “less is more” attitude to an uptick on maximizing colors, patterns and textures. A lamp shade can do all of that- consider the trimmings and details, the surface of the lampshade to provide a canvas for a great print and the varying sizes and shapes that the overall lamp can take on. It’s the perfect way to make a statement.
Dip dyed pillows
I’m not sure if this is the right term for these batik style prints but I feel like the more natural stained and tie dye pattern is back as a front runner for throw pillows. This is definitely nothing new, and they have had their time to shine in the past, but compared to the offerings last year around this time- this is a more fluid and casual design.
Pottery
I recently read a whole article on the antique pottery Martha Stewart was collecting. In true Martha fashion she had accumulated an entire shelving unit of pieces in the same color which made for a stunning and pleasing display. It inspired me to get two Hall vessels that I used for the holidays on m kitchen window sill. The prominent placement of this pottery piece for sale made me do a double take and wonder about the possibility of this growing trend.
European inspiration
As a scrapbooker I have always enjoyed this decoupage style artwork that looks like a picture that has been painted over a french playbill and stamped at the post office. They’re colorful and quirky- there are swans with crowns, inspirational quotes, butterflies, ferns and mushrooms. They aren’t for everyone but they are definitely the opposite of minimalism!
Biophilic Art
We’re not just looking at an artistic nest or a collection of feathers anymore, the evolution of this art is now a handful of nature as if scooped from the forest floor. Bark, pine cones and lichens in all their glory. The colors are becoming more vibrant.
And that’s the trends that I have noticed recently. That the “more is more” attitude is starting to prevail once again. Hopefully we will end up somewhere in the middle- where people can use cherished pieces without worrying if they clash with the rest of the room. But also that there aren’t so many elements in that room that those pieces are never seen.
