The Small Business Summer Series Returns with Farm & Flower
Did I previously allude that I hoped to find a business for my summer series by stumbling upon it? Well, that is exactly what happened Father’s Day weekend when I decided to turn by the giant FLOWERS sign at a country intersection on our back roads drive to Bonduel. It was a –
“Let’s just see what’s this is all about…” moment.
What we found was a lovely little family owned greenhouse and gift shop on the Erb Farm, halfway between Shiocton and Navarino. They can be found at Erbs-Farm-Flower on Facebook where I learned they host a variety of seasonal events.
A large part of their business is annuals and floral baskets, many of which have already been bought for the year. Their vegetable plants, which were far healthier and further along than the ones I recently planted, were already reduced in price as the window to get these in the ground is slowly closing.
The spacious greenhouse had a remaining assortment of flowering annuals that were cool and unique and would really pop in a planter.
I was already researching some of these planting zones to see if I could over winter them because the shape and color of the leaves were right up my alley. I always gravitate towards leaves with shape and texture over flowers.
But the most adorable revelation of this country greenhouse was the little red shack that was designed to be a welcoming gift shop chock full of all the things you would expect to love!
Home decor, yard art, candle holders, jewelry and even some clothing! The items were so cute and the prices were so great I couldn’t help leaving with a few of my own finds.
But what really had me looking up and down inside this cozy space was the actual interior of it. Yes, when it comes to design and construction- I can even find something notable in a garden shed!
The walls and ceiling had this great finish to them that allowed the open framing of the structure to remain exposed. There was wood paneling on the end walls and a complimentary paint color that worked perfectly on all the beams.
What struck me the most, though, was the texture in between all the side wall and ceilings joists. The friendly cashier (who identified herself as the daughter of the owner) mentioned her mom was an interior designer and had faux finished the foam insulation to give it this effect.
Brilliant!
You can make the “short beautiful drive from anywhere” to the Erb Family Farm & Greenhouse anytime this season and even join them for fall and holiday activities. I’m sure I will find myself back there soon!

Thanks for taking the road less traveled with me for our kickoff to the Small Business Summer Series! Next month I’ll introduce you to a 10 year-old business in Green Lake that recently took on a not-so-small expansion: KDR Wood Design Co.
Coming Soon!
And if you are still looking for a plant loving shop to duck in to get out of the rain we’ve been having this June, the Stock Peddler in Shawano is also a small business gem worth the drive-
