Brick by brick (or block by block)
One of the things that first drew me to this homestead was the old historic barn on the property. I knew that old barns like this required upkeep but I could see a potential there once we were finished with the remodel on our house. In the fall of 2022 we began our first stage of work to the barn, starting with the drainage and the overgrown box elder trees. The crew we hired was passionate about showing off what they believed was a unique structure in pretty good shape. This inspired us to keep pushing through what had become multiple appointments with less than enthusiastic contractors. The owner of the excavation team eventually gave us a referral for the masonry work that was needed on the cracked cinder block corner. Since then the whole plan to keep the barn standing another hundred years has been coming together! Here’s what the newest progress looks like!

As all our projects have taught us- sometimes you have to have patience. Sometimes you have to wait for the right people to come into your path. We were frustrated for years thinking we wouldn’t ever find anyone to tackle this dream with us. I worried parts of the barn were about to tumble in. But it feels good to know we didn’t give up. It feels good to know we began working on the barn just as we said we would all those years ago. All those years ago when we were remodeling our house one room at a time.
This month we saw our barn get torn apart and put back together- one block at a time.
There will be more stories of our barn project Coming Soon to the Blog!
