Sunday Night Supper: Signs of Spring
It’s been a while since I highlighted the happ-happ-happenings of our family dinners in Bonduel. We’ve kept up the tradition every week. Part of our routine also includes walking a long loop through the 80+acre property with my dad and our dog. This usually involves checking on our future christmas tree seedlings that we planted in the open fields last spring, cleaning up the down twigs and branches on our trails in the woods and identifying trees that are in decline and will need to be logged. The nature outside of every Sunday Night Supper is really a fantastic mix of high ground and lowland, forest and field, straight and intentional evergreen rows bordered by messy and free forming pockets of marsh grass and cattails. It is unique in every season. And we have almost had every season in the last month!
While we seem to be stalled between sporadic snow storms and seventy degree days our usual progression to spring has left much to be desired.
Which is why I can appreciate the inside of Sunday Night Supper and my mom for doing what she does best. On the inside of the house she has been creating little signs of spring, subtle changes to the decor, to welcome us each week to a festive home. Here’s a few of her effortless faux flower arrangements meant to combat this confusing outdoor transition and bring in the new season we have been waiting for!
The Mantle
In the log inspired great room addition to my parents old farmhouse there is a beautiful stone fireplace with a log mantle that my mom enjoys changing with the seasons. This is as easy as an Easter basket with a few faux tulips in it.
The Hearth
An explosion of pink and burgundy silk flowers spills out of a basket on the hearth. A favorite of ours- turkey feathers gathered from the woods itself- add an organic element to the inexpensive floral.
The Sideboard
The sideboard we had custom built for the dining room stretches across the west wall of the central room of the house and has become the place for the previously featured miniature village. Here we get a mix of Easter decor with everyday car paraphernalia, the true sign that a home is lived in and enjoyed for more than just the perfect photo opp.
The Dining Table
The dining room table that we gather to eat around every Sunday night gets a regular change up. For the current season we see these adorable little colored dishes full of a variety of jelly beans. These have an even more authentic “Sunday Night Supper-esque” quality when you consider they were purchased from the seasonal aisle of the local Dollar General. Proof again that you don’t have to break the bank to add something charming to your home. You just have to be able to see potential.
The Easter Basket
And finally we have my favorite decor item. A basket accessorized with a few mossy garlands, a sprig of purple flowers, a white ceramic rabbit and some vibrant glitter eggs. Not to mention our reoccurring theme of the addition of feathers.
As we all wait for our interrupted spring to resume and our gardens and woods to fill up with real flowers to pick, we can add a little color into our atmosphere with some of these ideas. Sunday Night Supper remains a place that echos what our seasonal soul craves. And my mom just has fun creating these special little touches in her home.
