Black and White and red all over
After last week’s dive into each paint manufacturer’s pick for color of the year I was also reading about other color trend predictions from design magazines. Somewhere along the line I saw the color red trying to be revived and it instantly had me reminiscing about our once terrifying upstairs “red room” and my controversial decision to install a soaking tub at a time when tubs were being tossed from bathroom designs.
I thought I would take a minute to share some of the more recent bathroom trends that are easy to embrace if you are planning a New Year refresh!
Black Sinks
I fell hard for this trend. I looked at a ton of black sinks before picking my granite ones for my mini makeover last summer.
While I don’t expect to encounter my sinks in too many other homes, they are a piece that is more like an expression of art. Similar to the floral Kohler sink I saw on tour at a show home.
But my favorite example of this trend comes from the matte version on display in this bathroom below.
You will surely see this image again in a future story when I get around to talking about wallpaper and also this pastoral country vibe I have been noticing as we experience modern farmhouse loosen up a bit.
Statement Tubs
I chose my tub for the size and the slipper style that I can admire from the loft outside my second floor bathroom. In recent years at the Las Vegas Builder’s Convention there have been more and more vendors showcasing some amazing tubs.
I would especially love to see the bathroom that this orange glass beauty ends up in.
Whatever style you admire just remember to choose a tub that fits your body so that you will be comfortable for a soak. And if you worry about being water conscience, find a tub that won’t feel like a waste to fill up or you won’t ever end up using it. My tub fits me nicely and I use it quite a bit.
Classic Color Combos
The exact opposite of the future design for that orange tub is pretty much this.
Black and white tub.
Black and white tiles.
Classic Color Combo.
It’s a look that rarely goes out of style if done right. I’m also hearing quite a bit of buzz about small mosaic floor tiles and penny tiles are also not done having their moment.
I’d like to say we are ready for some more experimental black and white tile but I feel like we had a taste of this with the farmhouse patterns-
And we all know that even if they aren’t out of style yet- they are certainly in line to be one of the most trendy things from that design aesthetic. By comparison the classic standards are still surprisingly solid options.
While not exactly a classic black and white makeover, my second floor bath is one of the more mild and traditional color spaces of my entire house. Here’s another look at my “not so red anymore” bathroom during construction and after tub install-
As a former second floor closet-less “bedroom,” I haven’t decided if this bathroom remodel is more appropriate for a “small but mighty” post or if I should share the unique art I have selected to hang over the tub as part of my new work-in-progress Collected Home series. Either way you will be seeing the other side of this room soon enough!
