I begged and pleaded, I tried to cheat it…but the Autumn came.
It came just the same.
It came on the heels of the school bus rolling down our country road in the chilly morning. It came on the storm clouds of a moody afternoon that hid that warm and carefree summer sun. The next couple of months will be beautiful, no doubt. They will try to win me over with their spectacular display of changing leaf colors. With the damp and misty days that smell of moss and captured light deep within a forest trail.
I will love the waning days ahead. I will never miss a sunset or a full moon rising. But I resent the Autumn for what I know it intends to do- it is preparing me for the greater change ahead. It is gently allowing me to let go, little by little, of the long days and the greenery. It is instead easing me into the hibernation and the shortening of time that winter presents. And it is no longer the winter that I hesitate to embrace. Not at all. I appreciate the beauty of this season too. It is the passing of another year. It is the feeling that, once again, it has all gone so fast.
