What’s Trending: Comparing two stores best displays
I recently visited two retail establishments that always inspire me interior design-wise. I noticed a few trends mixed in with the changing of the displays to an autumnal vibe at both places that I thought I would share!
Temperatures might be dropping but Color Tones are Warming up
I am so relieved to see the fall colors creeping into our black and white and grey interiors. I noticed a repetition of blue mixed in with the grey between both stores and in multiple displays. In both cases this hue is credited with adding a much needed warmth. The pop of an orange pillow and the tarnished gold vases are giving fall vibes and also creating texture.
It’s all about texture!
Every one of these photos reflect a more textural decor I think we can thank this time of the year for. From stormy fall skies and rugged tree scapes to fields of tasseled corn stalks harvested to leave behind nubby tapestries of land- the next couple months are rich with the shades and textures of a season on display before it is covered in a sleek blanket of white. Our last hurrah is to adorn any empty corner of our home with pumpkins, baskets and cozy blankets.
Similar to the use of a cheetah print in the previous photo, these faux pumpkins take advantage of a more exotic peacock feather in a fall appropriate color scheme. The shiny sateen fabric adds a bit of unexpected glamour.
Large Scale Art on parchment
While my eyes are immediately drawn to the feather print, the whole photo is giving vibes- the texture of the pillows on the couch, the rusty color scheme and the over sized art. This piece continues the trend of frame-less and canvass-less art. No matting, no protective glass, no busy frame, no fussy hanging devices. These large scale prints are art on a piece of parchment type paper and are adhered with small magnets to a backing attached to the wall. This is not a new thing- and I admired similar art decorating a model homes years ago- but this artist seems to be expanding their works. I admired this series of fishing flies and reels visible in the upcoming shot.
Unexpected Prints on Pillows
Prints on pillows are to be expected but the type of prints being showcased are adding a whole new design element. Once again remembering the choice of a peacock feather for the above pumpkins over a more seasonal turkey or pheasant feather, these designs share a more exotic and unexpected flair.
Dated or Vintage?
This bedroom photo is showcasing a fairly neutral pallet with a crystal lamp base and tin framed mirror. What could come across as a dated light fixture is helped by the vintage quality of the pillow cover and the addition of a black shade, lending it charm within the vignette. It is once again giving us texture and the glass is warmed by the gold metal. Surrounded by a different decor this lamp could easily look dated instead of a must have piece.
Singing the Blues
This sofa has it all- the texture of the chenille looking upholstery in a trendy grey blue color, the Ikat pillow with a fringe (texture!) and the interesting lion print pillow (exotic!). Our hanging lights in the foreground is giving clear glass and gold, although in a much more modern package than the cut crystal lamp.
Even though this sofa reads more grey the need to pair it with blue is evident in the lamp and a square denim poof in the background. The velvet fabric is on trend with a change to richer textured upholstery in the home. The reflection in the mirror shows an art wall full of vibrant colors with playful subjects.
Traditional Ceramics
And finally, the other trend I still see making the rounds is a return to some of the more traditional blue and white ceramics. The modern look that dominated for years with decor accessories was so minimalist that something rich in pattern was bound to make a comeback. These are less fussy than other designs and the technique is closer to a hand painted Spanish tile than the more common English Willow pattern. Nonetheless it gives us another shade of blue and a traditional texture to enrich our decor for autumn!
