Fall Travel Series: Eagle Tower
The school buses are back up and rolling along, there is a nip in the morning air and a tinge to the tree lines that is hard to ignore. The changing of the season is upon us and although it always takes me a minute to finish mourning the days of summer, it’s time to look ahead at how to take in the best of Wisconsin in the fall. Let’s kick off this Travel Series with more of a starting point for planning a day trip! Door County, Wisconsin is so well known for all its offerings I don’t feel like a full post about its wonders are necessary. Instead I will share a recent attraction we took in and leave the rest up to you!
I haven’t been to Peninsula State Park in Door County for years. The last time I was atop the Eagle Tower was one of my first road trips with Nick when we started dating, which was well before they it closed in 2016. The new and improved tower reopened in 2021 with an impressive addition. The original design of the staircase inside the tower still has you climbing to enjoy a view 65 feet in the air but you now have an alternative if steps aren’t your thing. Upon seeing aerial views of the ramp leading up to the top of Eagle Tower it looked more like the steady incline of a roller coaster track at an amusement park than a boardwalk to your best views of Green Bay. I definitely wanted to check it out for myself!
We began our journey looking for parking. We were there the last “real” week of summer before school started so for a weekday the parking was still pretty cozy. The spot we found had us hiking up the blacktop road a little before starting our ascend of the tower.
Once at the top you can check out the islands in the distance and read a little history of the area off of the information placards. In about a month I would imagine the fall color is stunning from up here! If you are choosing to road trip to this area to see the leaves change this is a must stop! We mused at the horizon, snapped a few photos gazing into the distance and began our casual walk back down.
Besides the destination view, I was just impressed with the amount of craftsmanship and structure that was put in place to make this giant ramp through the canopy of tree tops. I needed to see it to believe it!
This tower won’t justify a whole day trip in itself as you might spend a half hour to an hour here. Use you State Park Pass to see this newer addition to Peninsula or obtain a daily or hourly sticker to take in the tower among other natural areas and lighthouses- a key Door County experience! I’m glad I made this a stop and can document seeing Eagle Tower through a new phase of its life and a new decade of mine!
Thanks for checking out this quick little post about an update to a classic attraction that made a old standby into a new experience for me. Over the next two months this series will be taking in the sights of many other waterside locations through hiking trails, bridges and boardwalks. With the Great Lakes nearby we will definitely be spending most of these adventures in Wisconsin, with the exception of our next feature: The abandoned mining town in Fayette State Park, Michigan.
See you next time!
