Small business Summer Series: Greg’s Speed Shop
A few years ago an innovative couple began creating a brand and signature shop outside of Waupaca, WI to go with their race car hobbies and vintage vibe. I toured it on a rainy fall day and snapped a few photos of what drew me to the interior design aspect of the place. Besides being an operating garage it is also a unique shopping experience for racing merchandise or an outfit to fit in at the Symco Shakedown (every August) or Mississippi Mayhem (every September) events. I am sure a lot has changed at Greg’s Speed Shop and I am hoping to get there again soon. Here’s a peek into why you should do the same!
There are stairs and levels in this building giving it an opportunity to look like a street with store fronts and a garage inside a garage.
There are places to sit and swap racing tales while the nostalgia of old signs and vintage pieces surround you.
A vintage ticket booth beckons from a movie theater designed for future events.
How could I not love the building materials and textures used to create the retail clothing area? The rough saw wood is mixed with a tin ceiling. Through the doors at the back you can catch a glimpse of the masonry used throughout the building, some of the bricks were salvaged and hauled from historic buildings in Chicago.
But perhaps the most unique discovery of the exploration is the perfectly recreated vintage apartment on the upper level complete with period appropriate furniture.
The Kitchen
And there is even a vintage hair salon with these vibrant print chairs! Note the corrugated steel wall finish to tie in that industrial look!
If you are looking for a quality mechanic for your classic race car or attire for a weekend pin-up contest- you should check out Greg’s Speed Shop in Waupaca and appreciate all the ideas and salvaged materials that went into this unique business. For a location that was constructed new they added plenty of the elements of a great old building that I can appreciate!
