Sticks and Stones: Shopping in Colorado
We recently returned from a long weekend in Estes Park, Colorado. While there I wandered into this shop of beautifully crafted wood furniture and unique light fixtures appropriately called Sticks and Stones.
For those of you that don’t have a shopping radius that includes the Rocky Mountain region of Colorado- Sticks and Stones can be found online if you are as intrigued as me by their merchandise. Enjoy this sampling of their shop!
Unique wood pieces are obviously their specialty. The petrified wood coffee tables, dining room chairs with bark covered construction and gnarled wood legs on bedside tables showcase all the natural attributes wood has to offer that is often removed and sanded for a more traditional appearance. The move towards more minimalist and streamline design has allowed for this type of furniture to emerge as statement pieces. You don’t have to live in a log cabin to bring home something with a little rusticity and make it work. With clean white surfaces still a popular trend and technology creeping into every corner of home design, adding a connection to the elements becomes a welcome touch.
I can appreciate this log wine holder and log slice table with a patching of turquoise for doing just that. The wine holder sheds it’s bark and expected log look to showcase a veining in the wood surface. Akin to a silhouette of roots pushing through dirt it makes a good representation of the element Earth.
The log round table fixes a stress crack with a bejeweled filler that leaves the top looking like a topographical map of a river tributary. Perhaps continuing the theme and suggesting the element Water?
The elements vibe continued into the accessories around the shop. I couldn’t stop looking at this wall of vases and candle holders that blended twisty branches and stumps with almost melted looking glass, creating a natural and surreal piece of art for your home. No two were alike.
If I were basing my examples from the shop on the Greek’s four elements of matter these would definitely represent Fire.
I also found myself drawn to these driftwood ducks. There is something so simple about finding the natural shape of a bird in the lines of the wood and bringing it out. I am amazed at how the weathered wood can be polished creating this beautiful juxtaposition of something old and worn birthing life and motion as the ducks appear in flight.
These also perfectly conclude my elemental role call by showcasing the element Air.
And finally- for those of you wood lovers who appreciate a piece for it’s wood grain, this roll top desk was a stunner!
The construction on this piece has all the rustic features I love- the log legs, rounded drawers and even that touch of a live edge bull nose, while also giving the traditional wood worker the satisfaction of that smooth well sanded desk top.
Their quaint shop on the main street of Estes Park is packed with unusual finds like these along with some great lamps with tin and hide shades, a collection of stone nightlights and more! It was a treat to take in a custom furniture shop while on this little getaway and to enjoy an art and decor that felt true to the mountainous region we were visiting! Don’t hesitate to check them out if you are decorating a cottage or cabin or just looking to bring a piece with rustic character into your home! They urged us to visit them online and I got a sense you could call and easily obtain information on pricing, availability and shipping!
