How the north woods cabin is evolving for todays decorating trends
Long before I ever knew I wanted to be an interior designer my parents used to take us kids through different model log homes scattered throughout Wisconsin as a fun Sunday road trip. Ever since then I have always had a soft spot for a very rustic woodsy look. Which is why a part of my heart sung when I walked through the doors at the Roughing It In Style furniture showroom outside of Minocqua. If you are going to have an up north retreat where the furnishings look like they were crafted from trees cut down during lumberjacking days…then this is the place for you! But don’t expect that this place is all about knotty pine and shades of cedar…oh no- there is an evolution in the design world that is evident even here! Here are some of my favorite examples!
Mixed Woods Bar
What up north getaway couldn’t use a bar area for mixing a cocktail after a long day on the lake? My favorite thing about this set up is the mix of woods featured. Here you can see the addition of the black as an accent, the grey barn wood look and yet the whole things till feels like traditional cabin furniture by keeping the natural pine wood color as an accent!
Black and Grey
Cabin furniture should feel natural to the elements. But how do heavy woods with tons of texture still fit with todays pallet? By embracing the weathered reclaimed wood look and pairing it with black accents. I would buy this dresser for my upstairs bedroom in a heart beat!
Standout Pieces
Using the unexpected as an accent piece of furniture is the ultimate up cycle! And although I don’t think this is an actual piece of airplane, converted to a desk, the idea and shape is a standout piece that would be fun to have in any home!
Industrial Accents
This console was a pleasing rustic wood that would look good in a modern home as well as a time worn cabin, but the best part was the industrial base!
Rustic cabinets meet timeless subway tile
And by far this kitchen was the biggest example of how far the north woods cabin retreat look has come! The barn wood cabinets keep with the previously mentioned trend of grey woods and the apron front sink is a nod to the farmhouse look…but the white backsplash tile and modern lighting gives the whole thing an entirely different feel. It is an eclectic blend of everything that is going on right now presented in a package that rides the line between trendy and classic cabin.
And there you have my favorites from a quick trip through their Minocqua showroom!
